At least two people were killed and six others injured after a shooting outside a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building in Salt Lake City, according to local authorities.

The shooting happened at around 7:36 p.m. local time on January 7, when police officers responded to reports of gunfire outside the church meetinghouse. At the time of the incident, a funeral service was taking place inside the building, police said.

According to officials, an altercation broke out outside the church, which led to shots being fired. Two people died at the scene, while at least six others were taken to the hospital. Three of the injured victims are in critical condition. Police confirmed that all victims were adults.

Dozens of people were attending the funeral when the shooting occurred. Investigators are currently interviewing witnesses and reviewing evidence to understand what led to the violence.

Police said the suspect or suspects are still at large, but officers have obtained strong leads and are actively working to locate those involved. Authorities are also trying to determine whether one person or multiple people were responsible for the shooting.

Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd stated that investigators do not believe the shooting was a targeted attack against religion. He added that it also does not appear to be a random act, and police are looking into whether the incident may be gang-related.
