Former NFL running back Doug Martin, best known for his years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has died at the age of 36 while in police custody, according to officials from the Oakland Police Department.
Authorities said Martin was involved in an alleged home break-in on Saturday morning. During an attempt to detain him, officers reported that “a brief struggle ensued.” Moments later, Martin became unresponsive and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
“While attempting to detain the individual, a brief struggle ensued,” police said in an official statement. “The subject became unresponsive and was taken to the hospital, where he later died.”
Martin’s family confirmed his death through a statement shared with U.S. media, saying the cause of death remains “unconfirmed.”
“It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning,” the family said, requesting privacy during this difficult time.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Martin’s former team, also released a statement expressing their condolences.
“From his record-setting rookie season in 2012 to his multiple Pro Bowl selections during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise,” the team said. “We are deeply saddened to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing.”
Born in Oakland, California, Martin was selected in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Buccaneers. His rookie season remains one of the most memorable in team history — he rushed for 1,454 yards and scored 11 touchdowns.
Nicknamed the “Muscle Hamster” for his incredible strength despite his 5’9″ frame, Martin became a fan favorite. However, his later years were marked by injuries and a 2016 suspension for violating the NFL’s drug policy. After apologizing publicly, he entered a drug treatment program and returned to play his final season with the Oakland Raiders in 2018.
