Ohio Woman Killed in Aggressive Deer Attack at Her Home
An Ohio woman tragically died after being attacked by an “aggressive” deer on her property, according to reports from WTRF-TV.
What Happened in Belmont County?
The deadly incident took place in Belmont County, Ohio, near the West Virginia border. Sheriff’s deputies responded to the home around 10:30 p.m. on November 15 following reports of an “animal attack.”
Upon arrival, they learned that Jodi Proger, the victim, had been trapped inside an outdoor enclosure with a male deer that had suddenly become violent. The deer was reportedly kept inside a pen on the family’s property.
Family members tried desperately to reach her and stop the attack before deputies got there. According to a statement from the Belmont County Sheriff’s Office:
“Family members attempted to intervene and dispatch the animal prior to the arrival of law enforcement … however, the animal was ultimately dispatched by responding deputies.”
Emergency responders moved in once the scene was secure, but tragically, Proger was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sheriff James Zusack stated that no foul play is suspected, and the case remains under investigation.
Who Is Investigating the Attack?
The ongoing investigation includes:
- Ohio Department of Natural Resources
- Ohio Department of Agriculture
- Belmont County Coroner’s Office
These agencies are working together to understand what caused the deer’s sudden aggression.
How Dangerous Are Deer to Humans?
According to the National Deer Association, deer are among the deadliest animals in the U.S.—not because they attack people, but because of the large number of vehicle collisions they cause.
Actual deer attacks on humans are rare. When they do happen, experts say the causes usually include:
- Illness
- Injury
- Fear or stress
- Hormonal aggression (especially in male deer during mating season)
