Washington — Political journalist Olivia Nuzzi has officially parted ways with Vanity Fair, marking a dramatic turn in her once-promising media career. The split comes after increasing backlash surrounding her controversial tell-all book American Canto and renewed attention on her alleged relationship with former presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
In a joint statement, representatives for both Nuzzi and the Condé Nast-owned magazine confirmed that they had mutually agreed to let her contract expire at the end of the year, stating that the decision was made in the best interest of the publication.
Nuzzi, previously a high-profile reporter for New York Magazine, had built a reputation as a rising star in political journalism. However, her career trajectory changed in late 2024 when reports surfaced about her alleged personal involvement with Kennedy — a man she was professionally covering at the time.
What Sparked the Controversy?
The situation gained renewed attention following the release of American Canto, Nuzzi’s recently published memoir. In the book, she details an intensely emotional connection with an unnamed political figure, widely believed to be Kennedy. She admits expressing deep personal feelings, raising serious questions about journalistic ethics and professional boundaries.
Kennedy, now serving as Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Donald Trump, has denied any physical relationship. He is currently married to actress Cheryl Hines.
Still, the revelations were enough to reignite outrage among political and media insiders, ultimately leading to Nuzzi becoming increasingly isolated within Washington circles.
What This Means for Vanity Fair
The decision to part ways with Nuzzi marks a crucial moment for Vanity Fair as it attempts to protect its reputation and maintain editorial integrity. The magazine has not announced who will fill her role moving forward.
Media analysts see the split as a broader reminder of the importance of ethical boundaries in journalism, especially when covering powerful political figures.
