Will the Yankees Bring Back Cody Bellinger? Bronx Bombers Free Agency Priorities
Re-signing Cody Bellinger has emerged as one of the top offseason priorities for the New York Yankees. The team is also actively looking to add a starting pitcher, more bullpen support, and a reliable backup catcher before spring training arrives.
Bellinger, who joined the Yankees before the 2025 season, delivered an impressive performance with 29 home runs and 98 RBIs, playing across all three outfield positions and first base. Now 30 years old, he opted out of his $25 million contract for the upcoming season, entering free agency for the third time in four years.
Yankees Want Bellinger Back — But Competition Will Be Strong
General Manager Brian Cashman confirmed the team’s interest in re-signing the star outfielder.
Cashman said:
“We’re very interested in bringing Bellinger back. He’s going to have a lot of choices because he can do a lot of different things. He was a terrific addition for us last year … We’d be better served if we could retain him. But if not, we’ll look at alternative ways to fill it.”
With Bellinger expected to draw significant interest across MLB, the Yankees may face tough competition in negotiations.
Bullpen Reinforcements Are a Major Offseason Need
Beyond Bellinger, the Yankees are also aiming to strengthen their bullpen. Key relievers Devin Williams and Luke Weaver have entered free agency, creating additional holes to fill.
Trade deadline additions David Bednar and Camilo Doval are currently projected to anchor the back end of New York’s bullpen as the offseason begins. Still, the team wants more late-inning depth to remain competitive in 2025.
Yankees Also Looking for a Starter and Backup Catcher
The Yankees’ offseason checklist includes:
- A reliable starting pitcher
- Additional bullpen arms
- A backup catcher to support the pitching staff
These moves are expected to be addressed before spring training.
Timeline: Answers Expected Before Winter Meetings
Cashman said he hopes the team will have a “clear definition of what’s going on” by early December, when the MLB Winter Meetings begin.
The coming weeks will determine whether Cody Bellinger returns to the Bronx or whether the Yankees pursue alternative roster solutions.
